About Us
Three Generations of Farming
We are a third generation family owned and operated farm. Highgate Farm was purchased by Patricia's Grandpa Ted and Grandma Gertie in the 1940's who sold fertile turkey eggs, from free-ranging birds, to make a good living. Patricia and I took over the farm in 2016, after it sat idle for over 25 years, and have turned it into a livestock farm for super healthy pasture/forage raised meats.
We have only heritage animal breeds - Irish Dexter Cattle, American Guinea Hogs, Boer Goats, and eggs from Rhode Island Red and Wyandotte Chickens. We also have Border Collies that help us work with the animals! 'Grandma Gravenstein Apple Tree' was the only fruit tree left from the original homestead orchard. So, Grandma Gertie planted our current orchard over 70 years ago with a clear plan to keep the farm well supplied in apples and pears the entire harvesting season.
Early summer, very tart, Yellow Transparent Apples are ready by July 4th thru early August. Mid to late summer, less tart, Gravenstein Apples are ready mid- August thru September; and the sweetest are the Fall Apples from mid-September thru October. Bartlett Pears first ripen in July thru August; Bosc Pears mid-August thru early October. The orchard also has an ancient Quince tree to add an exotic flavor to cobblers and jams. Our kitchen garden includes strawberries, raspberries, currents, and goose berries; and all kinds of annual vegetables. Check out our Pantry section for canned goods from orchard and garden.
